Martin Bickerton is one of the most exciting young guitarists of his generation. He studied at the prestigious Chetham's School of Music and was then awarded a major entrance scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where he is currently in his final undergraduate year studying with Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey.
Born in Southport, England in 1989, Martin started his musical life studying percussion and singing but at the age of 10 became inspired by the guitar. While at Chetham's, Martin performed as soloist at venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester Cathedral, Lancaster University, Lincoln Cathedral, Flixton House and Killarney Cathedral.
In his youth, Martin was the winner of numerous competitions and music festivals in the northwest of England and in 2006-2007 he was a member of the National Youth Guitar Ensemble directed by Gerald Garcia. With this ensemble Martin recorded and performed at the World Youth Guitar Festival with the Eden-Stell Duo.
Martin has also played in master-classes with Edwardo Catamario, Mark Eden, Roland Dyens, Julian Byzantine, Manuel Barrueco, Gary Ryan, David Russell, Mark Eden, Graham Devine and Gaelle Solal. Martin has also attended festivals and summer schools in France, Germany and the UK.
Since entering the Royal Northern College of Music in 2007, Martin has been extremely active as a soloist and chamber musician. He has a regular duo with guitarist Amy Perry and his duo is currently on the Live Music Now and Music in Hospitals schemes. Martin has performed alongside the BBC singers in performances that were broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. He has also recently released a debut guitar duo CD, Inspirado Por Espana.
Martin Bickerton plays a 7 string guitar by the English luthier Stephen Hill.
